How do you hang curtains in a bay or bow window?

You’re right, hanging curtains in a bay window is more complicated than normal. But don’t worry, you’re not sacrificing style for substance, you can still cosy up with a hot mug of cocoa and slippers in the evening if you choose the right fittings. It’s actually fairly simple, for a three-section bay window you can buy specialised curtain rods that allow the curtain to be pulled all the way round. You can also buy bendable curtain rods that would work well for arc-shaped bow windows.

Do bay or bow windows increase home value?

Absolutely, they can significantly increase the value of your home. Not only do they improve the aesthetic appeal with their elegance and style, they allow extra light to shine into your property while creating more space. What you can do with the extra square footage well, the possibilities are endless! How about a reading nook or play area? Or simply somewhere to drink a cup of tea and admire the views? Let your creativity run wild.

They may cost more to install than normal windows, but you will see the return on your investment and we believe that the benefits outweigh the costs.

How many sides does a bay window have?

The most common bay window has three sides, often in a trapezoid shape. The window space projects away from your home creating extra space with two windows at a 45-degree angle on either side. This is the most popular design amongst homeowners that occupy homes from the late 19th and early 20th century in the UK.

Another UK favourite are the box bay windows, which form a rectangle shape away from the house with side windows at a 95 degree angle. These create even more space enabling the homeowner to fit an armchair or table in the area for optimum cosiness.

At Perfecta, we manufacture both! It’s up to you to decide what better suits your home, or if you’re not sure, one of our friendly staff will be happy to give some advice.

What is the difference between a bow and a bay window?

Both windows add value to your home by creating extra space and light. A bay window is made up of three or more windows that angle out beyond your property’s exterior. Since the window protrudes outwards, you can enjoy an extended view of the landscape and beyond whilst creating additional seating space.

Similar to bay windows, bow windows extend outwards but traditionally sweep away from the wall in an elegant arc of four or more windows. Bow windows are typically wider to create that curved effect and like bay windows, homeowners can add a window seat for a quick and easy addition to any room.

Do bay and bow windows open?

Due to their design, both bay and bow windows are installed to add extra space and increase light in your homes. Traditionally, bay windows are made up of three panels and either just one or all of these will be able to open. Bow windows, on the other hand, tend to be smaller and thinner due to their curved design. So although they can be opened, it may just be a section or two rather than the whole thing.

If you fancy designing your own bay or bow windows and want to explore your creativity, then get in contact with one of our advisors today and we can discuss how these will open!

What can I put in a bay window?

It’s completely up to you! Popular suggestions are additional seating areas filled with cushions and throws, ideal for getting stuck into a good book. Or how about an extra storage space, bookshelf or cosy nook for your beloved pet?

If you don’t fancy building anything new, then how about placing a table or an armchair in the space? Perfect for a cup of tea with a friend while enjoying the view!
