Are French doors always double?
It depends on how you look at them! They are constructed using two glass doors within a single frame, rather than two separate doors in two separate frames. This sounds more confusing than they are; essentially there is no pillar between the doors so when they are both open, they provide uninterrupted views of your beautiful surroundings. You can choose whether or not you’d like to open just the one or both segments, but when opening both you create a smooth transition between your inside and outside spaces which is particularly lovely during the summer months.
Why is it called a French door?
As their names suggest, French doors originated in France. Influenced by Greek and Italian architecture, their innovative design was developed to maximise on light to create airy and spacious rooms in the home. The style fast became a French favourite, with homeowners installing them to create entrances leading to their outdoor balconies all over the country. Before long, they became a trend and increased in popularity across Western Europe.
Today, they add a touch of elegance and class to complement any home. They are the perfect way to seamlessly transition between your inside space and your garden, so you can enjoy nature from the comfort of your home all year round.
What is the difference between patio doors and French doors?
They have many similarities, but their main difference is the way they function. French doors consist of two doors within one frame that open either inwards or outwards, whereas patio doors are more commonly constructed using two sliding panels. Both are great investments, depending on what is the more suitable option for you. If you are restricted by space, patio doors may be the better choice as they stay within the frame and cause little obstruction. French doors, on the other hand, work well as an entrance as they create a larger space to walk through, while increasing the air circulation in your home.
Do I need planning permission for French doors?
If you’re simply replacing doors in the same size opening or are making a larger space for your French doors, then you wont need planning permission. However, this is only true when the doors are at the rear of the property and not at the front of the house, facing the road. You also need to be careful if you live in a listed building or period property, as there may be restrictions in place. At Perfecta, we are certified with CERTASS to ensure your doors comply with building regulations approval. So there’s no need to worry!
Do French doors swing in or out?
It’s a question of personal preference and your individual needs, as they can do both. Some homeowners would prefer their French doors to swing inwards for practical reasons, as if they were to swing out they would end up blocking a garden path, or perhaps they have shrubs or furniture in the way. Outward-opening doors provide unobstructed space in your home, so if you’re working with a smaller room then this might be a better option for you. Whatever you choose, all our French doors are fitted with modern tension hinges so you don’t need to worry about them slamming shut in the wind.
Do French doors increase home value?
Absolutely! Not only do they create light and airy rooms, they provide stunning views of your outside space with no distractions. Made mainly of glass, they add a touch of class and elegance to your home as they create an open-plan, modern feel.
It is a great way to enhance your home’s aesthetic whilst showing off your outdoor space, making it more of a feature. To really add value with your new French doors, make sure they’re made from high quality materials that are durable, secure and thermally efficient. At Perfecta, we custom build your French doors to your specific requirements, providing both a beautiful and practical addition to your home.
