What is a casement window?
Casement windows are incredibly popular and are commonly hinged from the side, allowing the window to swing open. You can opt for either single or paired windows to be fitted within one frame and when opened outwards, natural light and air is able to flood into your home.
Though conventionally hinged on the side, you can also decide whether to opt for a top hung casement window. These are otherwise known as awning casement windows and are perfect for protecting the inside of your home from the elements. As they open at the bottom, away from the building, they are perfect for wet weather as they block out the rain! Alternatively, if you’re looking to update your basement you can choose bottom hung casement windows, which would allow more light and ventilation and may be a more suitable option for your space.
Are casement windows more energy efficient?
Casement windows are great at keeping the cold air out during the winter months and the warm air in, ensuring you and your family stay snug inside your own home. They’re extremely energy-efficient with their airtight seals and insulative qualities, meaning you won’t need to spend so much money on bills.
You can also opt for double or triple glazing which will help insulate your home even further. The double or triple glazing also helps reduce noise if you live on a busy street or just crave total peace and quiet
What is the difference between a casement window and a picture window?
Both casement windows and picture windows have their benefits. Due to their hinge, casement windows can be swung in or out so you can maximise on your home’s ventilation and wave goodbye to stuffy rooms.
Picture windows tend to be bigger than casement windows and are designed to create stunning panoramic views of your surrounding landscape. Picture windows are made up of very few window panes, so you can soak in the scenery uninterrupted.
The main difference between the two designs is that casement windows open, whereas picture windows are normally fixed shut.
Are casement windows safe?
Casement windows are highly secure. With their special hook-shaped locks inserted directly into their frame, it would be very difficult for an intruder to break in from the outside. Their multi-locking system also adds another layer of protection, so you can relax and unwind knowing your loved ones are safe.
At Britannia, our casement windows are also covered by the Official Police Security Initiative.
How much do casement windows cost?
It completely depends on a number of factors, like the material used, how much work it takes to get the window installed, as well as the time taken to get them fitted by our engineers. For example, it will be less expensive to simply replace an old casement window as opposed to installing a brand new set entirely.
In terms of material, uPVC casement windows are our most affordable option and timber and aluminium are likely to cost more. If you would like a free, no obligation quote then get in contact with an advisor today.
Are casement windows worth it?
We believe that they are! Not only will they add a touch of style and class to your home, they are perfect for letting in light and air. Casement windows are also great insulators, with their compression seal technology creating an airtight seal so that your home stays cosy and draught-free all year round. This means you’ll be less tempted to turn up the thermostat, resulting in cheaper energy bills!
They’re also easy to operate, ideal for those who have a disability or limited mobility, with their crank mechanism requiring little effort to open or close the window.
