What is the difference between French windows and French doors?
The difference between French windows and French doors is simply down to the size and the way they are used. They both use the same mechanism and are the same design, which involves two glass panels that open away from each other. With no pillar dividing the two panes of glass, both French windows and French doors create uninterrupted views of your stunning landscape when fully opened.
Why are French windows called French windows?
These windows do not originate in France as their name suggests, but derived from new ideas in art and architecture in the Renaissance during the 17th century where light was a central theme. Generously sized windows that doubled up as doors became fashionable. Not only did they increase light and ventilation in a property, they oozed elegance and style.
It wasn’t long before this trend came over to France, where they installed large windows that could double-up as doors onto balconies on summer days. They were an instant hit and the design became increasingly popular across Western Europe over the next few decades.
Are French windows secure?
If made with quality materials, French windows can be as secure as any other window. Other variables to consider when ensuring your windows are secure are the type of glazing and the lock mechanism used.
At Britannia, our customers’ safety is a top priority. All of our products are approved by the Police-led Secure By Design initiative and meet their high standards. We use three-point locking systems, locking shoot-bolts, high security hinges and thermally toughened glass on all our double glazed products.
We can also guarantee that our expert engineers will not leave your property after installation without ensuring your windows are highly secure.
Do French windows swing in or out?
French windows can open both ways, it’s totally up to you and your preference. Some homeowners prefer inward-opening windows as they’re easier to clean. However, these can eat into your inside space and large, heavy curtains may cause an obstruction.
French windows that open outwards work well in inviting the outside into your home and with our modern, anti-slam features it’s unlikely they’ll get caught by a sudden breeze. They also help in keeping the rain outside and collect less debris in the frames.
Ultimately, it’s down to you to choose whether your French windows swing in or out based on what works best for you and your home.
What are the advantages of French windows?
If you’re looking to benefit from your stunning surroundings, then French windows will be the perfect fit for you and your home. Their classic design allows you to soak in the views from the comfort of your own home, while maximising ventilation and light. You can even angle your French windows to catch a breeze, so you can enjoy the fresh air on a hot day.

Can French windows be used as a fire escape?
If your French windows can open unobstructed and are the right size, then they can be considered a FENSA-approved fire escape route. A fire escape window, when opened, must create an unobstructed space of 0.3 metres squared.
The UK government-authorised scheme requires that every top floor room must have a fire escape window installed as long as they aren’t over 4.5 metres above ground level – which tends to be the case for most standard first floor windows.
