Are uPVC sash windows any good?
uPVC is renowned for its durability and is highly versatile. Nowadays, there are so many different colour and finish options, your uPVC windows can replicate a traditional looking sash window with a finish that’s almost identical to a classic freshly-painted wooden one, minus the maintenance! This results in uPVC being cost-effective without compromising on quality or aesthetics. They are easy to clean and don’t require any additional upkeep after their installation, but look great for years to come!
Can sash windows be double glazed?
With uPVC sash windows, you can install double or triple glazing, resulting in better insulation and lower energy bills. The layers of glass trap gas between them, so that the cold air doesn’t leak in and the warm air doesn’t escape out, so your home is cosy and enjoyable all year round.
uPVC is highly cost-effective and also means that you can install a double glazed sash window for a cheaper price, whilst opting for a wood grain finish if that’s your preferred aesthetic!
How do you measure a sash window?
Measure from one side of the window to the other within the frame, excluding the width of the box that the window sits in.
To measure the height of your sash window, include both sashes when you measure from the top of the window to the bottom.
To get an accurate measurement of the sash windows themselves, ensure you measure inside the box frame.
For the height of the box frame, measure from the top of your window frame all the way down to the windowsill. For its width, include the entire window frame.
How does a window sash work?
A sash window is constructed using one or more movable panels or sashes, which form a basic frame to hold variable panes of glass. They work by having at least one panel that can move vertically up or down.A single-hung sash window has just one moving panel, but if you are looking to increase the air circulation in your home, then a double-hung sash window lets both the top and bottom panels move so may be the better option.
Operating on a pulley system, when the sash window slides open the glass panel will remain in the same place. You also don’t have to worry about your sash window shutting on itself when you let go of the sash, as there is a counterweight at the end of the cord that holds the window sash in place.
Are uPVC or Aluminum windows better?
It depends on your budget and lifestyle. UPVC is the most cost-effective option, providing excellent insulation as well as durability and easy maintenance.
Aluminium sash windows are the more expensive option but are more of a robust material. Due to its strength, aluminium sash windows can have smaller window frames and sashes installed, resulting in more light and uninterrupted views due to the larger surface area of glass.
Which part of the window is the sash?
The sash is the moveable part of the window that holds the glass pane. Depending on the type of window you have, the sash can vary from being double or single hung. With a double-hung window, both sashes can open. With a single hung window, only one sash will open and the other will stay fixed in place. Either way, a window sash must be properly installed and maintained so that they last for years to come.
